The Naismith Memorial Hall of Fame is an independent, nonprofit organization named after James Naismith, the founder of basketball and first-ever basketball coach in history. He invented the game in the late 1800s and it was first played in Springfield, MA. Therefore, the Hall of Fame opened its doors there in 1959 to honor the birthplace of basketball. Today, it is most known for the time-honored Enshrinement Ceremony to induct outstanding figures from the basketball world into the Hall. Its mission is to spread accessibility to the game internationally for beginners and pro-level players. It continues to do this by orchestrating high school and collegiate programs around the world.

Following in the footsteps of the 2014 Baseball Hall of Fame line, this coin arrives in a dome-shaped design to give a 3D effect of an actual basketball. There was a public competition to decide the design for the obverse of the coin. The winning design was created by US Mint Artistic Infusion Program (AIP) artist Justin Kunz. This design highlights the strength the game demands from its players in addition to the diverse range of athletes who play this game. In the illustration, three players reach above their heads to grab the basketball in midair. There is an additional intelligent design of a basketball hoop drawn up from the net-like background and border of the coin. The combination of the hoop background with the players hints that the players are about to score.

AIP artist Donna Weaver designed the reverse. This illustration shows a basketball about to fall into a hoop. Inscriptions are featured on the coin with information on the face value, country, artist initials, and “E PLURIBUS UNUM”.
