The Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame was established in Springfield, MA, also the birthplace of basketball. This is an independent, nonprofit organization that promotes, celebrates, and maintains the game of basketball for everyone. The Hall of Fame has over 400 inductees from accumulated over sixty years. They support all teams without discriminating based on the identities of the players including whether the team is amateur or professional, and foreign or domestic. 

The design for this coin was decided from a public competition, with the US Mint Artistic Infusion Program (AIP) artist Justin Kunz as the winner. His design of the obverse presents the idea that basketball unifies athletes from many different backgrounds. There are three players all reaching for the basketball above their heads to emphasize how physically exerting basketball is. The background and border serve as the basketball hoop’s rim and net that gives an effect of an incoming score.

The reverse design is by AIP artist Donna Weaver. It demonstrates a basketball about to go through the net. Inscriptions are featured on the coin regarding the face value, country, artist initials, and “E PLURIBUS UNUM”.
