1 oz Silver Eagle coins were first minted in 1986 after the approval of the Liberty Coin Act on July 9, 1985. The silver eagle coin series is a legal tender issue of the United States government. However, the Burnished American Silver Eagles are only minted at the West Point branch of the US Mint.
The obverse of the 1oz Silver Eagle coins features the Walking Liberty, an iconic design that first appeared on Silver Half Dollars in 1916. The design was created by the renowned student of Augustus Saint-Gaudens, Adolph A. Weinman. In it, Lady Liberty walks forward with her right arm held out and branches in her left arm. The U.S. flag unfurls behind her as the sun rises in the background.
The reverse displays the updated Heraldic eagle designed by American engraver John Mercanti. Here, a bald eagle poses behind a striped shield as 13 stars representing the 13 original colonies form a triangle over its head. It holds olive branches and arrows in its talons and grasps a banner reading "E PLURIBUS UNUM" in its beak.
