The obverse of this coin was decided from a public competition whose winner was Justin Kunz from the US Mint Artistic Infusion Program (AIP). His design captures the diversity of the athletes of this game, and how demanding this sport is for its players. Three different athletes stretch for the basketball in the air over their heads. The background features a net texture that when paired with the border of the coin gives the effect of a basketball hoop. This also suggests an impending score by the players reaching for the ball. 

The reverse design is by AIP designer Donna Weaver. It displays a basketball mere moments before it falls into a hoop. Inscriptions surround the ball.
