The design for this coin was decided from a public competition, with the US Mint Artistic Infusion Program (AIP) artist Justin Kunz as the winner. His design of the obverse presents the idea that basketball unifies athletes from many different backgrounds. There are three players all reaching for the basketball above their heads to emphasize how physically exerting basketball is. The background and border serve as the basketball hoop’s rim and net that hints the players are about to score.

The reverse design is by AIP designer Donna Weaver. It displays a basketball mere seconds before it falls into a hoop. Inscriptions surround the ball.
