The Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame has been open since 1959 in Springfield, MA. It was supposed to open earlier, but WWII delayed the opening of this independent, nonprofit organization. This Hall of Fame gets its name from the founder of basketball, James Naismith, from 1891. It has operations around the globe to promote, maintain, and honor the game of basketball. Its most known operation is the annual Enshrinement Ceremony. It additionally oversees more than seventy high school and collegiate competitions around the world.

The obverse of this coin displays the public competition’s winning design. The artist whose design won is Justin Kunz. He is from the US Mint Artistic Infusion Program. His design set out to showcase both the diversity of the athletes for this game and the endurance basketball demands from its players. Three different players reach for the basketball over their heads. There is also a subtle design of a basketball hoop on the coin. The background has a net texture, while the border of the coin is meant to be a basketball rim. This gives the impression that the players might be about to score.

The reverse of this coin was designed by AIP artist Donna Weaver. She illustrated a classic image of a basketball about to fall through a hoop with inscriptions around the border.
