Detailed Information:
Baseball evolved from older bat-and-ball games that were played in the mid-18th century in England and were introduced to America through the immigrants. Today, baseball is rooted deeply in American culture. The National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum located at Cooperstown, New York is a hub where one can learn about the baseball history, about players, and important people who managed and served the sports. One can also see some of the rare artifacts related to baseball. The motto of the Hall is to preserve the history of baseball, honor excellence, and connect generations. The Hall was founded in 1939 and 2014 marked the 75th anniversary of the Hall and to honor the Hall, US Mint released a 3D curved coin that looks like a baseball from a top view.
The coin was authorized under Public Law 112-152. The Congress also had specifications on the shape of the coin to be curved. A nationwide competition was held for the common obverse design. Several artists, coin designers, and sculptors took part in the competition. 178 designs submissions took place which was reviewed by a panel consisting of National Baseball Hall of Fame members and US Commission of Fine Arts, the designs were also reviewed by the Citizens Coinage Advisory Committee. Out of the 178 designs, Cassie McFarland’s design which depicted a 1960’s baseball glove was selected. The design is so realistic that it even brings out the leather texture of the glove. The concave shape of the obverse gives an illusion that the leather glove is open and is ready to catch a ball.
The reverse features the design of a baseball used in major leagues which even shows off the stitching details of the ball. The convex shape of the reverse gives an appearance of a realistic-looking baseball and the concave shape adds to the 3D effect to make it look like a real ball when you look at it from the top. The design is done by the US Mint chief engraver and sculptor, Don Everhart.
The coins were made in three different metals; gold, silver, and clad. Gold has a face value of $5, silver has a face value of $1, and clad has a face value of half a dollar. All the coins were minted in Proof and Uncirculated versions. The proof and uncirculated gold coins were minted in West Point Mint, the proof and uncirculated silver coins were minted in Philadelphia Mint and has “P” mintmark. The clad proof coins were minted in San Francisco, and the clad uncirculated were minted in Denver Mint.
The coin was a super hit not just with numismatists and investors but also with regular people and people who loved sports. This is the first coin to be minted in a curved shape in the US Mint history and is an extremely popular coin.
