The Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame is dedicated to the founder of basketball, James Naismith. It has been operating since 1959 to honor figures in basketball and to promote the game for others globally. This Hall of Fame maintains the game by working as an independent, nonprofit organization. It is most known for its annual Enshrinement Ceremony, but it also conducts over seventy high school and collegiate competitions both domestically and internationally.

This coin’s obverse design is by Justin Kunz from the US Mint Artistic Infusion Program (AIP). His design of three players reaching for a basketball high over their heads won in a public competition. Kunz set out to showcase not only the diversity of the players of the game, but also to show how strenuous the sport is both physically and mentally. The background of the coin also has a net and is paired with the basketball rim border to create a subtle basketball hoop on the coin. This remarkable design in conjunction with the players gives the effect of an incoming score by the players reaching for the ball. 

The reverse of this coin was designed by AIP artist Donna Weaver. She illustrated a classic image of a basketball about to fall through a hoop with inscriptions around the border.
