The obverse design of the coin was decided from a public competition. The winning designer, Justin Kunz, is from the US Mint Artistic Infusion Program (AIP). This design is meant to showcase how strenuous basketball is in addition to the diversity of the athletes who play this sport. There are three players reaching for the basketball over their heads. The background and the border together make up a subtle design of a basketball hoop, suggesting that the players are about to score.

The reverse design is by AIP designer Donna Weaver. It displays a basketball mere moments before it falls into a hoop. Inscriptions surround the ball.
