The obverse of this coin parade the 1916 “Walking Liberty” illustration by Adolph A. Weinman found on the American silver half dollars from the early 1900s. In the design, Lady Liberty marches to the coin’s left. Her right arm extends towards the rising sun, and the American flag flaps gently behind her. She also bears a bounty of olive and oak branches in her left arm.
The coin’s reverse has the John Mercanti updated United States National Coat of Arms. This illustration has a bald eagle with outstretched wings as the centerpiece. It holds a bundle of arrows in one talon and an olive branch in the other as a symbol of the “peace through strength” sentiment. Hanging from its beak is a banner that reads “E PLURIBUS UNUM.” Finally, its chest bears a shield emblazoned with the US flag, and 13 stars twinkle above the eagle’s head to honor the original colonies.
