Since 1986, the American Eagle Series was highly sought after by coin collectors. This is because this series is the first US bullion coin series after FDR outlawed private possession of precious metals during the Great Depression. The American Eagle silver bullion coins continue to this day to be among the top annual purchases by coin collectors everywhere. As a coin manufactured by the US Mint and backed by the US government, Silver American Eagles also make a great first buy for anyone beginning to collect bullion coins.
The obverse of this coin bears the original 1916 Adolph A. Weinman “Walking Liberty” illustration first seen on the American silver half dollars from the early 1900s. In the design, Lady Liberty strides to the left side of the American Eagle silver bullion coin. Her right arm reaches towards the rising sun and the American flag waves behind her. She also carries olive and oak branches in her left arm.
The American Eagle silver bullion coin’s reverse displays the updated John Mercanti design of the US national coat of arms. In his illustration, a bald eagle with outstretched wings is the centerpiece of the picture. This heraldic eagle carries arrows in one talon and an olive branch in the other to signify the “peace through strength” ideology of the US. The eagle also clutches a banner in its beak that says “E PLURIBUS UNUM”. On the eagle’s chest is a shield emblazoned with the US flag. Finally, thirteen stars lie above the eagle’s head as a nod to the original thirteen colonies.
