Part of a celebrated tradition, the British Gold Sovereign has been minted since 1817, during the reign of George III. These coins were initially circulated in the British Empire, until 1914 when they became Trade Coins. After WWII the Gold Sovereign proved to be a popular trade coin in the Middle East and other areas, often being exchanged for a variety of goods. As of 1979, the Gold Sovereign Coins have been struck as a Brilliant Uncirculated coin for the Bullion Industry, as well as Proof sets for enthusiastic collectors.

The obverse features the regal bust of Queen Elizabeth II, wearing an ornately decorated crown. Designed by Jody Clark, this portrait is the fifth iteration of Queen Elizabeth’s visage on the British currency. The reverse, designed by Benedetto Pistrucci, showcases a return to the traditional design of St. George heroically slaying an evil dragon while on horseback. As legend suggests, Saint George battled the dragon who was demanding human sacrifices and defeated it, saving the life of the princess who was selected as the next victim.
