Originating back to the medieval battlefield, the Royal Arms was displayed by the British monarch on banners, shields, and armor. Indicating a ruler’s authority, approval, and power, the coat of arms has experienced numerous changes to its design throughout the years as different monarchs ascended to the throne. The current royal coat of arms first appeared on currency as early as the 1300s and is now used by Queen Elizabeth II.
The coin’s obverse depicts the profile of Queen Elizabeth II, designed by Jody Clark. Her head faces right and she wears her royal crown and elegant jewels.
The coin’s reverse, designed by Timothy Noad in 2019, displays the royal coat of arms. A lion and unicorn leap out from behind a shield. This shield features the crest of the nations of the United Kingdom. The three lions in the corners represent England, the fierce rampant lion represents Scotland, and the melodic harp represents Ireland. ‘Dieu et mon droit’ (‘God and my right’) is etched on a ribbon underneath the lion and unicorn while ‘Honi soit qui mal y pense’ (‘shame upon him who thinks evil upon it’) is inscribed on the shield. A striking radial line texture is shown in the background.
