The Britannia coin series started in 1987 with the release of the Gold Britannia Coin, followed by the release of the Silver Britannia Coin ten years later in 1997. The Platinum Britannia coin is the most recent Britannia coin in the program, as it was first introduced in 2018, drawing positive attention from investors all over the globe. The personification of Britannia is considered to be among the most important images on British coinage to date. The term “Britannia” traces its roots back to the 1st Century AD, during a time of significant conquest for the Roman Empire. Britannia is commonly utilized as the name of the mythical figure tasked with defending the British Isles from those who would dare attack them.
The obverse of this coin features the famous Jody Clark effigy of Queen Elizabeth II, facing right while wearing her regal crown. The reverse showcases the awe-inspiring image of “Britannia” as she stands strong amidst a powerful gale. She holds out her tall trident with her outstretched arm and holds onto a shield and olive branch with her other hand.
