The Britannia coin series launched in 1987 with the release of the Gold Britannia Coins. The Silver Britannia Coins were not produced until ten years later in 1997. The Platinum Britannia coin was introduced in 2018, making it the most recent edition of the Britannia coins on the market. The term “Britannia” traces its roots back to the 1st century, during the time of the Roman Empire. "Britannia" is the Latin term for "Roman Britain," but the female personification did not come to fruition until the second century. Britannia is known for her trident, shield, and centurion helmet. This is a design inspired by the goddess Athena and/or Minerva. Britannia is the mythical figure tasked with defending the British Isles from those who would dare attack them, and her image persists to this day as a symbol of Great Britain's naval strength.

The obverse of this coin features the famous Jody Clark effigy of Queen Elizabeth II, facing right while wearing her regal crown.

The reverse showcases the awe-inspiring image of “Britannia” as she stands strong amidst a powerful gale. She holds out her tall trident with her outstretched arm and carries a shield and olive branch with her other hand.
