The Platinum American Eagle was authorized by Congress in 1996 and first released in 1997. Along with this 1 oz size, the first Platinum Eagles had multiple denominations for investors to choose from. But today, Platinum American Eagles only come in the weight of 1 troy ounce, much like the Silver Eagles. However, Gold American Eagles are continually struck in varying weights, including 1/10 oz, 1/4 oz, 1/2 oz, and 1 oz sizes.
