This coin, from the esteemed Perth Mint, is the very first release in the Lunar Series III. In 1999, the first 12 year series called Lunar Series I started being produced and continued until 2010. The second series, Lunar Series II, started in 2008, which caused Series I and II to overlap during a two-year span from 2008 to 2010. This adorable Year of the Mouse coin (also known as the “Year of the Rat” coin), notes the first release in the 12-coin Lunar Zodiac Series III. A brand-new animal image will be minted each succeeding year, following the pattern of the previous two series.

The reverse showcases a field mouse climbing stalks of wheat, while it glances at the sky. Inscriptions appear near the mouse’s body.
