The Austrian Mint is celebrating its 825th anniversary this year with a series of 3 coins relating to its origin. Widely known for its beloved Vienna Philharmonic Coin Series, the mint was established in 1194 by Duke Leopold V of Austria. As such, the first coin in the series represented the Duke, while the second represented the Austrian city of Wiener Neustadt. Now, the mint is releasing the last coin in the series, which calls back to the English legend of Robin Hood. Robin Hood’s legend of stealing from the rich and giving to the poor, it turns out, takes inspiration from Austrian history. This is because Duke Leopold V earned the silver treasure he used to found the Austrian mint by holding the English king Richard the Lionheart ransom. This ransom, then, served as the basis for the heavy taxes in the Robin Hood myth.

This ruthenium 2019 Austria Hood coin is minted from .999 fine silver coated in black ruthenium and given 24 karat gold highlights on certain key features. The coin’s reverse displays Robin Hood highlighted in gold as he nocks two arrows in his bow while hiding among the leaves of Sherwood forest. The obverse, meanwhile, uses the same Duke Leopold V equestrian seal as the previous two coins in the series. This seal shows the Duke riding into battle on horseback as he holds a shield and his banner. He, like Robin, is also highlighted in gold. Joining him are engravings marking the denomination, the weight, the year of mintage, and the phrase “REPUBLIK ÖSTERREICH”.
