2019 1 oz Austrian Silver Robin Hood Coin BU - 825th Anniversary of the Austrian Mint

Established in 1194 by Duke Leopold V of Austria, the Austrian Mint has been running continuously for 825 years. To celebrate this momentous anniversary, the mint is branching out from its beloved Vienna Philharmonic coin series to create three special bullion coins calling back to its own 1194 creation. While the first coin in the series represented Duke Leopold V, and the second represented the Austrian city of Wiener Neustadt, this soon-to-release third coin in the series calls back to the English legend of Robin Hood.

As the tale goes, the notorious Prince John led England while his older brother, King Richard the Lionheart, was off fighting in the crusades. He then took advantage of Richard’s absence to levy a high and unfair tax on the English people, to which Robin Hood rose up to steal back John’s ill-gotten wealth. This legend, it turns out, is based on real events.

Now, like Robin Hood, the Austrian mint is giving back to the people, in the form of a 1 oz silver coin BU depicting the mythic hero.

The 2019 Austria Robin Hood is minted from .999 fine silver and features a glorious engraving of the hero on its reverse. Here, he hides amongst the leaves of Sherwood forest as he draws two arrows at the same time with his bow. The obverse of the coin, like the others in the series, depicts Leopold V’s equestrian seal. This seal shows the Duke as a military commander on horseback, equipped with a shield and banner. Joining him are engravings marking the denomination, the weight, the year of mintage, and the phrase “REPUBLIK ÖSTERREICH”.
