The US Mint’s American Eagle series began in 1986 with silver and gold coin releases. The obverse of the coin bears the iconic Augustus Saint-Gaudens' Lady Liberty design. In this illustration, Lady Liberty walks forward towards the viewer, bearing a fiery torch in one hand and an olive branch in the other. Rays of sunlight erupt from behind her, lighting up the distant US Capitol building. The reverse of the coin displays the American Bald Eagle, descending towards its nest where its mate and hatchling await its arrival. An olive branch is clutched in its talon.
