This astounding 2018 Great Britain 1/4 oz Gold Queen's Beast (Unicorn of Scotland) Coin is the fourth edition of the prestigious Queen’s Beasts program from the eminent Royal Mint.

First issued in 2016 by the British Royal Mint, the outstanding Queen’s Beasts series features on their reverse the famous 10 beasts which stood guard at Her Majesty’s coronation, each of them also supporting the badges of arms of the families which are associated with Queen Elizabeth II’s ancestry. The “Lion of England”, “Griffin of Edward III” and “Red Dragon of Wales” were the first three coins issued in the series, which will be followed by the Black Bull of Clarence”, “Falcon of the Plantagenets”, “Yale of Beaufort”, “White Lion Mortimer”, “White Horse of Hanover”, and the “Unicorn of Scotland”.

One of the statues was the Unicorn of Scotland - a mythical beast that many believed had the powers of healing, this horned horse was chosen by William I (William the Lion) in the Scottish coat of arms starting in the 12th century.

The reverse design showcases the Unicorn of Scotland, standing on its rear legs with its front hooves dangling over the royal badge of England, which includes an image of the Lion of England.

The obverse design features the latest effigy of Queen Elizabeth II, the same portrait as seen on all coins in the British Queen’s Beast Collection. Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II is captured in right-profile relief, this artwork created in 2015 by Royal Mint engraver Jody Clark
