America the Beautiful Series was started in 2010 in order to honor the beauty and splendor of the American National Parks. The program will release 56 coins in total, authorized by America’s Beautiful National Parks Quarter Dollar Coin Act of 2008. Each year, the US Mint releases 5 coins featuring important US National Parks, Forests, and Historic Monuments. The sites being featured on the coin will be released in the order it was first established as a national park or site.
The Apostle Islands National Lakeshore coin is the 42nd release in the entire series and the second release for the year of 2018. This Lakeshore was established in 1970 and is located in Bayfield, Wisconsin on Lake Superior. The Lakeshore consists of 21 islands and the mainland shoreline confines 69,000 acres and runs 12 miles. The Lakeshore is rich in historical and scientific values. Lakeshore is made of pristine beaches and coves, magnificent sea caves, and has the maximum number of lighthouses than any other national park service area.
