The design of this splendid coin pays tribute to the act of heroism, endurance, and leadership shown by Lieutenant John F. Kennedy in 1943 during the WWII in the Solomon Islands.

This coin is a representation of one of the most famous attacks in the history of WWII. For his courage and leadership to navigate his crew during the catastrophe, Kennedy was awarded the Navy and Marine Corps Medal, as well as the Purple Heart for his injuries.

On the night of August 2, 1943, Boat PT-109 was destroyed by Japanese forces and most of the crew was thrown into the water on impact - two were killed and one was badly burned. For two day,s they stayed on a small abandoned island with the prospect of a rescue being faint. However, a few days later two native Coastwatchers, who were patrolling the ocean, found the Kennedy crew and helped them send a message to a base.
