This commemorative coin is struck from .999 pure silver exclusively by the Royal Australian Mint to honor the act of courage, heroism, endurance, and leadership shown by Lieutenant John F. Kennedy in 1943 during WWII in the Pacific - the Solomon Islands.

The coin design depicts one of the most famous naval crashes in the history of WWII and the act of courage shown by JFK as a young lieutenant. During WWII, the crew of Boat PT-109 commanded by Lieutenant Kennedy attempted to patrol the Solomon islands but was bombed by a Japanese destroyer. A few men died in the incident, but it was only due to the heroic efforts of Kennedy that the remaining crew was rescued later on. After that incident, J. Kennedy was awarded the Navy & Marine Corps Medal and this story became a significant part of his biography.
