Each year, the reverse image of the coin is changed to a new depiction of the beloved panda bear, except for the coins issued in 2001 and 2002 which carry the same design.

The obverse of the 2017 1 Gram Chinese Gold Panda Coin features the latest Panda design on the series’ obverse face. Known as the Giant Panda, these majestic creatures are endemic to south-central China’s highlands, and are considered by many to be an unofficial emblem of the nation.

On the reverse of the Chinese Gold Panda is the outer facade of the Temple of Heaven. Located in south-central Beijing, this former religious site has appeared on the reverse of these coins since their first bullion issue in 1982.
