Detailed Information:

Krugerrand is just shy of 1 year from its golden jubilee. 2016 marks the 49th anniversary of its first release in 1967. There has never been another investment-grade bullion coin that was as famous and as popular as the South African Krugerrand. The sole purpose of bringing out this coin was to market South African gold. When you hold a Krugerrand, you are actually holding gold from one of the largest gold veins in the world, which is located near the Witwatersrand area in South Africa. It was in the mid-1800's that the gold was first found here and since then, at least 50,000 tons of gold have been mined here and supplied to the entire world.

The word Krugerrand is a blend of two words. The first half Kruger is from the name Paul Kruger, who was the President of The Republic of South Africa, and the person who led the Boer resistance against the British. Rand is the South African unit of currency.

During the 60s and 70s, it was considered illegal by many countries including the USA to own gold bars, but that was not the case for owning foreign coins. The South African Government came up with a plan to market their gold in the world. They gave their bullion coins a legal tender status thereby giving the world its first-ever modern bullion coin which also held this status. This allowed people from different countries to invest in these coins. However, due to the involvement of the South African Government in Apartheid, the other countries had made it illegal to import gold coins in the 1970s and 1980s.

When the Apartheid came to an end in 1994 in South Africa, the trading of Krugerrands became completely legal. Apart from Mexican Libertad Gold Coins, Krugerrands are the only other coins that are available in fractional sizes and without a face value. Krugerrands are available in ¼ oz, ½ oz, and 10 oz sizes along with the 1 oz size. They too like the Mexican Libertads do not have a face value but are sold on the value of gold content in them with a small premium over the spot price.

The design of the coin is simple yet extremely beautiful. The obverse features the portrait of Paul Kruger, and the reverse features the Springbok antelope galloping with the Wild African Scenery behind it.

They are minted at the South African Mint and are extremely popular for their quality, content, and lovely design. The finish is very neat and of a high standard.
