2016 Great Britain 1 oz Gold Year of the Monkey BU

The esteemed Royal Mint is pleased to reveal the latest release of its lunar coin series, and it is yet another dazzling coin depicting the ninth animal in the Chinese Zodiac. The third release in the series, the 2016 Great Britain 1 oz Gold Year of the Monkey BU is available for immediate shipping.

The Chinese Zodiac or Shēngxiào is a tradition based on a 12-year mathematical cycle, with each year being represented by an animal and their reputed attributes. Customarily these zodiac creatures were utilized to date the years.

The current year’s coin was exquisitely designed by English Chinese craftsman Wuon-Gean Ho, whose expertise has allowed for the perfect meeting of Chinese and Western traditions.

Occupying the 9th position in the Chinese Zodiac, the Monkey possesses characteristics such as curiosity, mischievousness, and cleverness. Perpetually fun loving, Monkeys are also considered inherently intellectual and creative.  Monkeys are quite resourceful and thrive on being challenged which is a testament to their ingenuity. 

The reverse side of the 2016 Great Britain 1 oz Gold Year of the Monkey BU features a monkey leaping playfully from one tree branch to another. This side also boats a monkey in the center of the coin with its arms outstretched while pushing off its hind legs in preparation for its grand leap onto another tree branch. The reverse side features the Chinese Character '猴', which transcribes as “monkey” in English, along with “YEAR OF THE MONEY”, and “2016” inscribed near the rim of the coin.

The obverse side of the coin features a new design of the effigy of her majesty Queen Elizabeth II, changed for the first time in a precedent 30 years. Her image is surrounded by her title, with the coins face value in Great Britain Pounds.

Each coin is struck in 1 oz of .999 fine gold, and is legal tender in the UK.

Individual coins will be packaged in a protective plastic coin flip, orders of 25 coins will packaged in the original mint sealed roll. Orders of 500 coins are packaged in Monster Boxes.
