These coins are minted at highest of standards at one of the oldest mints in North America, the National Mint of Mexico. Each coin is made of .999 pure silver and come in seven different sizes; 1/20 oz, 1/10 oz, 1/4 oz, 1/2 oz, 1 oz, 2 oz, 5 oz, and 1 kilogram. Detailed Information:

2016 marks the 35^th annual release of Mexican Silver Libertads. They were first issued in 1982. The coins are minted at National Mint of Mexico or Casa de Moneda de Mexico, one of the oldest mints in North America established in 1535 by the Spaniards. The mint is an IRA approved facility (ISO9001) and hence maintains strict standards when it comes to metal purity and production quality while minting the Silver Libertads or any other coins. Therefore the Silver Libertads are eligible for Precious Metals IR accounts. Each year these coins are minted in various sizes ranging from 1/20 oz to 1 kilogram. The various fractional values makes Silver Libertads a practical option if it has to be used as currency in the future.

The design of the Silver Libertad has changed since its first strike in 1982. From 1982 to 1995, the coin had a forward facing Winged Victory design that was inspired from the gold Centenario which was released to mark the 100th anniversary of Mexico’s freedom from Spain. From 1996 on to the current time, the design has changed drastically.

The reverse of the coin is the most recognizable and features the Winged Victory in a slightly sideward angle. She is placed on a special Victory column and is balancing with one foot on the column and the other foot in the air with her wings outstretched as if she is about to fly. This design is a tribute to the huge 24 karat gold covered, 7 ton bronze Winged Victory statue which is situated in downtown Mexico City. A majestic landscape showing the Valley of Mexico lies on the background along with the two famous Mexican Volcanoes Popocatepetl and Iztaccihuatl. There is a pre-Columbian legend behind these famous volcanoes which goes thus;

Popocatepetl was a warrior who fell in love with a King’s daughter, a princess named Iztaccihuatl. When Popocatepetl asked for the hand of the princess, the king put forth a condition that the warrior must first win a battle against a rival tribe. While Popocatepetl was engaged in the battle, a rival suitor started spreading a rumour that Popocatepetl had fallen in the battle. This shocked the princess who was also deeply in love with Popocatepetl and she died of a broken heart after she heard the news. When Popocatepetl returned victorious from the battle, he too was heartbroken to hear the sad demise of his beloved. Popocatepetl took the princess on top of a mountain range which assumed the shape of a sleeping woman in her honor. He then kissed her gently and took a smoking torch and knelt in front of the lifeless princess to watch over her. Facing each other their bodies were eventually buried under the snow forming two magnificent volcanoes that were joined for eternity.

The obverse side of the 2016 1 oz Mexican Silver Libertad Coin BU is graced by the current National Coat of Arms of Mexico, in the center where an eagle is holding a serpent in his beak and talons are perched on a cactus. Encircling the center design are ten different Coat of Arms of Mexico design that were used throughout history. They also denoted the ten provinces of Mexico. The center design has an encircled inscription of "ESTADOS UNIDOS MEXICANOS."
