2016 1/4 oz Standing Liberty Quarter Centennial Gold Coin PCGS SP 69 First Strike

2016 marks the jubilee of the original silver Standing Liberty Quarter which was in circulation from 1916-1930. To honor the original coin, US Mint has released the Standing Liberty Quarter gold coin. This is the second coin in the American Centennial Gold Coin Series. After the success of the first coin in the series, the Mercury Dime, this coin has become highly anticipated and revved up all the numismatists. The Standing Liberty Quarters was designed by sculptor Hermon Atkins MacNeil. It is one of the most complicated designs in the US coinage and the Mint had a hard time striking these coins. Therefore, most of these coins did not have a well-defined image of the Standing Liberty on them. The Standing Liberty coins are also the most difficult to grade as they already have three subtypes in their designs. Type I with the exposed right breast. Type II in which the bare breast is covered with chain mail vest and a different hairstyle from Type I and Type II where the dates are recessed.
