Detailed Information:
The Silver Standing Liberty was first minted in 1916 and to mark its centennial anniversary, a commemorative gold Standing Liberty coin has been released in 2016. The Standing Liberty had been a unique design in 1916 and is still a unique design in 2016. Lady Liberty has always been portrayed on all the US coins with very delicate feminine features, whereas in Standing Liberty, we get to see her showing off valor in a true sense. This design does possess those same delicate features of Lady Liberty; draped in translucent robes and with her robe dropping off her shoulder exposing her right breast, but we can also see a streak of masculine valor in her with her stance, head gear, and her shield adorned with stripes and streaks, which shows the military readiness of America. This design was a strong message sent out to Germany during World War I.
In her right hand, Liberty is holding an olive branch which symbolizes America’s desire for peace. This message is relevant even in today’s world of America’s military readiness for any kind of challenge as well as her desire for peace.
The reverse of this US Commemorative Coin features a majestic bald eagle in full flight with wings well spread. 13 stars; 7 on left and 6 on right encircle the eagle.
The coin was originally designed by Hermon Atkins MacNeil and the same design is used on the gold coin as well. It is believed that MacNeil used Doris Doscher as the model for the Lady Liberty design. Doris Doscher was popularly known as “the girl on the quarter.” She later went on to become a popular silent film actress. Although, there was another person claiming to have actually modeled for the Lady Liberty design and that was Broadway actress Irene MacDowell. According to her, the fact was kept concealed due to her husband’s disapproval to reveal the identity of herself as the person who modeled for the quarter design.
This US gold coin is graded by NGC and has earned a perfect MS 70 grade which is the top most grade NGC can award to any coin. The coin comes in a tamper proof NGC encapsulated pack. NGC in particular has brought out special and attractive labels for the different denominations in the Centennial Gold Coin Series. The label will bear the weight, content, and purity of the coin along with the grade of the coin. The specialty of the label is that it features a replica of the coin’s obverse design. The label has a very pleasant appearance.
