Detailed Information:
The 1/4 oz Standing Liberty Centennial Gold Coin was released to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the first release of the original Silver Standing Liberty Quarters which served as U.S. currency from 1916-1930. It succeeded the long running Barber Quarters series and was preceded by another long running series, the Washington Quarters. Although Standing Liberty was a short-lived series, its beautiful design of Lady Liberty in her full militaristic splendor has etched itself in people’s memory.
Since the design was complicated to strike, the Congress decided to cut short the series and introduced a very simple, uncomplicated, and easy to strike Washington quarters.
The designer of the original silver coin is Hermon Atkins MacNeil.
The obverse of the Standing Liberty Centennial Gold Coin features the original design of the 1916 Standing Liberty. The obverse features a grand image of Lady Liberty stepping forward confidently through the gate between two strong walls with full militaristic splendor. Her head is turned towards the Heraldic East, the direction in which Europe was involved in World War I. Her right hand is pulling off the drape from the shield in her left hand. The shield is adorned with the stripes and stars of the American flag and is also facing east in defense. Her right hand is also holding an olive branch to symbolize desire for peace. The image sent out a strong message to the world that America desired peace, but if threatened, it was ready for any kind of war. The design very much resembles an Amazonian warrior.
The reverse of the coin features a majestic American bald eagle in full flight with wings spread out. Seven stars are featured on the left and six stars are engraved on the right.
Special attractive 100th anniversary labels have been created by NGC for each of the coin in the Centennial Gold Coin Series that will go on the NGC packing. The label will contain a replicated image of the particular coin along the weight, content, purity, and grade of the coin on the label.
