The design was way ahead in its artistic appeal compared to its predecessor, the Barber Half Dollars which many felt was a stoic design. The creator of this unique beauty is Adolph A. Weinman, who was a student of the world renowned Augustus Saint-Gaudens. Adolph Weinman was an extremely popular sculptor who was invited to a competition to design this coin. He won not only the right to design the half dollar but as well as the dime.

Her gown and the drape is gently billowing in the wind, and she is wearing a Phrygian cap on her head which signifies Liberty. The reverse features a majestic bald eagle perched on a mountain cliff with wings unfolded showing fearless spirit. A mountain pine is springing from the rock crevice, symbolical of America.
