The Walking Liberty Centennial Gold Coin is being released this year to honor the original Silver Walking Liberty Half Dollar that was first minted in 1916. 2016 marks the 100^th anniversary of this coin. This is a very popular release by the U.S. Mint, as we get to see the beautiful Walking Liberty in gold now. Along with this coin, the Mercury Dime and Standing Liberty are also being remade in gold.

Coin Features:

• This is the third and final release in the American Gold Centennial Coin Series.
• Contains 1/2 troy ounce of gold with purity of .9999.

• SP - Specimen 69 - A fully struck coin with nearly imperceptible imperfections. Coin has a sharp strike with full original luster, with no more than two small non-detracting contact marks or flaws. No hairlines or scuff marks are visible. Eye appeal is exceptional.
• Obverse: Features a full-length figure of Lady Liberty walking with outstretched hands towards the rising sun with her gown and the draped flag billowing around her. She is holding olive and oak branches in one hand to symbolize peace and strength. Inscriptions - “IN GOD WE TRUST,” “LIBERTY,” and the year of mintage.
• Reverse: Features a majestic eagle perched on a mountain cliff with wings unfolded showing fearless spirit. A mountain pine is springing from the rock crevice symbolical of America. Inscriptions - “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” “HALF DOLLAR,” “E PLURIBUS UNUM,” content, purity, and weight.

The Citizens Coinage Advisory Committee and a majority of collectors expressed their interest for the Mint to strike these coins in silver instead of gold as it would be accessible to collectors and investors with a limited budget to invest in these coins. However, U.S. Mint finally decided to mint these coins in gold. The coins were mainly minted in gold, because the Mint under the existing statutory authority can mint collectible gold coins without any need for involvement of the Congress. However, silver coins need an Act of Congress to be issued by the Mint. So to pass an Act during the election year was a difficult job, hence the mint went ahead and minted the three coins in gold.

Many anticipated if the coins will be sold as a set of three or if they will be sold individually. The coins are being sold separately as of now and collectors can buy all three coins to make a set out of it. The coins come in a beautiful custom designed black matte hardwood presentation case. A certificate of authentication by the U.S. Mint also comes along with the coin.

Those coins which are graded by the NGC grading systems comes in a tamper proof encapsulation. NGC has come up with special attractive labels just for the 2016 centennial coins which will contain the grade of the coin; the technical specification such as content, weight, and purity of the coin and a replica of the design on the obverse of the particular coin is also printed on the label.

The Walking Liberty will contain the same design as its original counterpart, the silver Walking Liberty which features the Walking Liberty on the front and the bald eagle perched on a mountain cliff on the back.
