Detailed Information:

One of the oldest North American Mints, the Casa de Moneda de Mexico or National Mint of Mexico which is an IRA approved facility, mints the popular Mexican Silver Libertads. The coins are minted with highlevel minting standards. Each year the coins are released in 7 different and convenient sizes of 1/20 oz, 1/10 oz, 1/4 oz, 1/2 oz, 1 oz, 2 oz, 5 oz, and 1 kilogram. The Silver Libertads were first minted in 1982 and are a legal tender issued by Government of Mexico.

The designs on the obverse and reverse of these coins are unique, although the most recognizable design is on the reverse.

The obverse of 2015 1 oz Mexican Silver Libertad NGC MS 70 coin features the current National Coat of Arms of Mexico which is an eagle perched atop a cactus holding a serpent in its beak and talons. The history behind the design of the National Coat of Arms goes thus; in the beginning the Mexican people were under the tyrannical ruling class Azteca Chicomoztoca. One day Huitzilopochtli, the God of War appeared in the vision of Mexica’s highest priest and ordered the Mexican people to leave Aztlan. He told them to settle down in a place where they will find an eagle perched on a cactus on a stone in the water tearing a serpent in his beak and talons. After wandering for two centuries of wandering in the Valley of Mexico, one day the people of Mexica came across the very sight in the middle of Lake Texcoco on a small swampy island and this is how Mexican people settled down in city known as Tenochtitlan. Hence the eagle perched on a cactus holding a serpent in his beak and talons has graced the Mexico’s National Coat of Arms throughout its history.

The reverse features a grand design of Angel de Libertad, which is a tribute to the real 24 karat coated 7 ton bronze statue that is situated in the downtown Mexican City. The design shows the bare breasted winged angel placed on a special column balancing on one foot and her wings outstretched. It looks like she is about to fly and is holding a laurel wreath in her outstretched had to depict victory while in her left hand she is holding broken chains to depict freedom. A sprawling landscape of Valley of Mexico with the two famous Mexican Volcanoes Popocatepetl and Iztaccihuatl can be seen on the background. Engravings include the weight, purity, metal content, and year of mintage.

A great combination of low mintage and grand design of the coin has together increased the coins collectible and investment appeal in the recent years. More and more collectors and investors are considering investing in the Silver Libertads of late.
