2012 1.85 oz Gold South African Krugerrand NGC Gem Proof 4-Coin Set w/Box&COA

The concept of the Krugerrand was first introduced by the South African Chamber of Mines in the 1960's to promote physical gold as an investment opportunity for the "man on the street". The Krugerrand was released in 1967 as a legal tender coin and contained exactly 1 troy ounce of fine gold. This gold coin was unique in that it had no denomination because its face value was connected to the daily gold price. The Krugerrand was mass produced so that it could be sold at a relatively low premium over the current gold price. In 1980 the fractional Krugerrands (1/2 oz, 1/4 oz, and 1/10 oz) were released, making the Krugerrand affordable to more people.

The Krugerrand dominated the world's coin market over the next nine years but during the years when sanctions against the South African government were applied in the mid 1980's, other mints elsewhere took the opportunity to issue their own legal tender bullion gold coins. However, the Krugerrand had become one of the world's leading brand names and remains so today in the 21st century.

This elite Krugerrand First-Strike Set contains four limited edition proofs in 1 oz, 1/2 oz, 1/4 oz and 1/10 oz sizes that are certified by NGS as Gem Proof- coins that show an attractive high quality of luster and strike for the date and mint, with a few small scattered contact marks. These first strike coins, one of the first 300 struck, are only available in this set. The 1 oz Gold Krugerrand is 22 Karat gold and weighs 33.93 g with a diameter of 32.69 mm. The 1/2 oz Gold Krugerrand is 22 Karat gold and weighs 16.965 g with a diameter of 27 mm. The 1/4 oz Gold Krugerrand is 22 Karat gold and weighs 8.482 g with a diameter of 22 mm. The 1/10 oz Gold Krugerrand is 22 Karat gold and weighs 3.393 g with a diameter of 16.50 mm.

The obverse depicts a portrait of the fifth (and last president), Paul Kruger, a prominent figure who led the Boer resistance against the British. The reverse was designed by Coert Steynberg and depicts a springbok antelope, a national symbol of South Africa. The name "South Africa" and the gold content are also inscribed on the Krugerrand in both English and Afrikaans. This 2012 First Strike Krugerrand 1 of First 300 Struck Gem Proof Certified 4 Coin Set comes with a beautiful Mahogany wooden box to keep your investment safe.

Like all of our other gold coins, this one is guaranteed to be 100% authentic. Item will be wrapped and packaged safe for delivery.
