In 1871, Colombia moved to a gold standard that was connected to the French Franc as a result of the falling silver price. Colombia was on the gold standard until 1886, after which Colombia began to print banknotes that led to inflation since they were not backed by anything. Over 22 million banknote pesos existed at one point in circulation that were backed by closed banks. So, to combat inflation, new banknotes were made, and the old ones were redeemed at 100 paper pesos to one gold peso. Thus, by 1907, Colombia returned to the gold standard, and by 1913, the country began re-striking Colombian gold pesos. The first coins included the 2.5 and 5 Colombian gold pesos. Their unique purity and fineness mimic that of the British half-sovereign.

The obverse of the 2.5 Colombian gold pesos will vary based on the year. It can display Simon Bolivar or a stonecutter. Bolivar is often known as El Libertador “The Liberator” for leading the revolution against the Spanish Empire and serving as the first Colombian president and Peruvian dictator. The Colombian Stonecutter is the nickname for the 1913 2.5 Colombian gold peso due to its obverse design featuring a stonecutter.

The reverse displays the Colombian Coat of Arms. An Andean condor perches atop a shield, spreading its wings and clutching an olive crown in its beak. The national motto “Libertad y Orden,” which is Spanish for Liberty and Order, can be seen on the scroll over the bird’s talons and the shield. The shield bears various imagery including two cornucopias bearing fruit and wealth with a pomegranate in the center, the Phrygian cap, and the ocean with ships to represent trade and commerce. The flag in the background continues the imagery from each of the shield’s quadrants.
