To remember this important time, the US Mint proudly released the 1988 America in Space U.S. Mint 1/4 oz Gold Medal. The obverse was designed by Brian Kachel, a tweleve-year-old YAC student, who beat out more than 17,000 entries from his school.
Obverse: Features a US space shuttle in flight with thirteen stars, representing the original colonies, encircling the design. Inscriptions include "LIBERTY" and the year of mintage.
Reverse: Depicts a right-facing eagle, with its wings spread, atop of the Young Astronauts Program logo with thirteen stars, one inside the logo, on both sides sides on this design. Inscriptions include "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" and "YOUNG ASTRONAUTS."
