Few legends have captured the imagination of explorers like El Dorado, or “the Golden One.” Stories of a fabulously wealthy ruler and a land rich in gold helped inspire centuries of exploration across South America.
Guyana has a particularly strong connection to the El Dorado legend. English explorer Sir Walter Raleigh traveled to the region in the late 16th century searching for the legendary golden kingdom, helping cement El Dorado's place in Guyanese history and folklore. Issued in 1977, this commemorative $100 gold coin celebrates the legendary Golden Man. It was struck by the Franklin Mint for the Bank of Guyana, with a Proof mintage of only 7,635 coins.
