This beautiful 1976 Malta Lm50, or 50 Lira, Gold Coin is a part of the 5th Series of Maltese currency - The Door Knocker Series.

Before the invention of the mechanical and electrical bell, door knockers served a great purpose in practical terms. In addition they serve a decorative purpose, which is why they still remain highly popular. Many buldings in the Maltese Islands have door knockers with some of the most exceptional door knockers in Mdina and Valletta. They are elegantly designed and considered a work of art with each one having multiple motifs or themes. The door knocker is considered a reflection of the house owner's personality and status. 

The coins' designer was Pietro Giampaoli, with the obverse side featuring a coastal atmosphere with the sun high in the sky, with a traditional Maltese boat by the coast along with a shovel and a pitchfork on the sand, and an Opuntia, or type of Cactus. Surrounding the emblem is the inscriptions "REPUBBLIKA TA' MALTA". The reverse side portrays an ornamental door knocker with the denomination and the year (1976).
