1955 Doubled Die Obv Lincoln Wheat Penny 1 Cent PCGS AU Detail

This 1955 Doubled Die Obv Lincoln Wheat Penny 1 Cent PCGS AU Detail will make a great addition to any collection. The coin comes graded by PCGS.

Although dramatic in appearance, the 1955 doubled die cent is actually not a "mint error" in the technical sense, even though the mint erred in making and releasing this oddity. Dies used to strike coinage are made from "hubs" which impress designs onto the dies. These impressions occur multiple times in order to ensure the impressions are deeply enough molded into the dies. A "doubled die" occurs when the hub is not properly aligned after its first impression, leaving a design impressed at a different angle on the die. With most doubled dies, the hub is misaligned by millimeters or less, resulting in very slight doubling of the design in some areas, visible only under magnification. Doubled dies are known as "varieties" in numismatics rather than "mint errors." The 1955 doubled die cent is by far the most dramatic doubled die in U.S. coinage. Experts estimate that only about 24,000 were released into circulation, although PCGS estimates only a mere 2250 survive today.

The obverse features a portrait of Abraham Lincoln along with the year of mintage.

The reverse displays the denomination encircled by a laurel wreath.
