1943 50 Pesos Mexican Gold Coin AU/BU

To celebrate the 100 years of freedom from Spain, Mexico brought out the 50 Peso Mexican Gold Coin. The first set of coins was minted in 1921 at Mexico City Mint. Later on, there have been many restrikes that followed from 1921 to 1972. This coin is also known as The Centenario. Among these, there is one particular year, 1943, where the coin has different features from all the other years. The Mexican government at that time felt there was no reason to add the 50 Pesos wording on the coin as it contained far more than 50 pesos in gold. Hence they instead added the wording 37.5 Gr. Oro Puro to the left and the right of Winged Victory. Only 89,000 of such gold coins were minted and hence it is a ONE-YEAR TYPE LOW MINTAGE COIN. On public demand, the 50 Pesos wording was added to the coin the following year.

Coin Features:

  • The coin is .900 fine gold and contains 1.2057 troy ounces of gold
  • Issued by Banco de México from 1921-1947.
  • On the obverse, the coin has an image of the Winged Victory, The Angel of Independence holding a Laurel wreath to depict Mexico’s victory against Spain in her right hand and broken chains to depict Mexico’s freedom from Spain in the left hand. In the background are Mexico’s two very popular volcanoes Popocatepetl and Iztaccíhuatl. The coin shows two dates on its lower part, the first one is 1821, which is the year Mexico got its independence from Spain. The other is 1943, which is the year the coin was minted. On either side of the angel, the weight of the coin 37.5 g ORO PURO is etched.
  • On the reverse, the coin has the image of Mexico’s National Coat of Arms which is a Golden Eagle perched on a cactus and holding a serpent in its beak and talons.
  • This Mexican gold coin is in an Almost / Brilliant Uncirculated Condition.
  • The item comes in a neat presentable pack which is also safe for delivery.

The Centenario is made of 90% gold and 10% alloy which makes it durable and gives an orange tinge sheen, which you may not find even in some of the most popular gold coins like American Gold Eagles. It is one of the purest gold bullion that stands next to coins like Gold Liberty Head and Saint Gaudens when it comes to purity. It has an amazing aesthetic appeal.
