1929 $50 US National Currency Note Rutherford, NJ PMG VF 25 (Ink)

From the historic community of Rutherford, New Jersey, this 1929 $50 National Currency Note is a scarce collectible issued by a local bank during the small-size national bank note era. Certified PMG VF 25 with an Ink annotation, this note exhibits circulated character while preserving its design strength and historical significance. Currency issued by smaller towns such as Rutherford is far less common than that from major financial centers, making this piece especially desirable for collectors of regional banknotes

National Bank Notes were issued between 1863 and 1935 by local banks under federal charter. Each carried the issuing bank’s name and charter number, tying the note directly to its community. In 1929, the U.S. adopted smaller-size notes to standardize design and reduce printing costs, and these became the final series of National Bank Notes ever issued.

For Rutherford, New Jersey, the issuance of $50 notes reflected the role of community banks in supporting local commerce during the interwar period. With the Great Depression leading to widespread bank closures, many of these notes were quickly withdrawn and destroyed, leaving surviving examples as rare artifacts of both local and national history.
