Both the $2.50 and $0.50 coin was struck to commemorate the Sesquicentennial (150th Anniversary) of the signing of the Declaration of Independence on July 4th, 1926. The National Sesquicentennial Exhibition Association planned to release a series of coins in order to mark one of the most historical events in American history but only two coins were minted.
The obverse features a full portrait of Lady Liberty standing upon a globe holding a scroll in her left hand and a torch in her right (The Declaration of Independence). Inscribed are the words "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" and "LIBERTY" along with the significant years 1776 and 1926.
The reverse side depicts the Independence Hall in Philadelphia, PA as with the inscription "IN GOD WE TRUST", "E PLURIBUS UNUM" and "SESQUICENTENNIAL OF AMERICAN INDEPENDENCE". The denomination can also be found on the bottom of the coin.
