1900 HC VBP Denmark 10 Kroner Gold Coin Christian IX - NGC MS 64
The 10 Kroner Christian IX gold coins were issued between 1873 and 1900 by the Danish Royal Mint, making this coin a part of the very last year of production.
The obverse pictures King Christian IX. Born in 1818, Christian grew up in Denmark where, following the death of King Frederik VII in 1863, he succeeded to the throne. During his reign, he opened the door to pensions for the elderly, unemployment assistance, and tax breaks for families. He married Queen Louise, with whom he had six children. His eldest offspring would become King Frederik VIII of Denmark, the second king to be depicted on the 10 Kroner gold coin. Christian IX soon became a national icon due to the length of his reign and for his high standards of personal morality and integrity. King Christian IX died at the royal palace in Copenhagen in 1906 at the age of 87. However, the last issue of the 10 kroner Christian IX gold coin came six years before the king’s death.
The reverse portrays an imposing allegorical personification of Denmark, symbolized as a female figure in a sitting position with her left arm posed on a shield and wielding a scepter in her right hand. In front of her is a dolphin and behind her a sheaf of wheat.
