1900 $10,000 Gold Certificate Currency Note Washington DC PCGS CU 64

An extraordinary survivor from the era of America's gold-backed currency, the 1900 $10,000 Gold Certificate Currency Note Washington DC PCGS CU 64 represents one of the most visually impressive high-denomination notes issued by the United States. Cataloged as Friedberg 1225h, this example carries serial number M59787 and has been certified by PCGS Banknote as Choice Uncirculated 64. The note is also identified as Perforated Cancelled, a characteristic associated with surviving examples of this historically important issue.

The history of these $10,000 Gold Certificates is closely tied to a remarkable event in Washington, D.C. On December 13, 1935, a fire broke out at the city's Post Office building, where large quantities of government records were being stored. In an effort to protect documents from the flames, records were reportedly thrown from the building's windows onto the streets below. Among them were hundreds of previously cancelled $10,000 Gold Certificates, some of which were collected and taken home by people who had gathered nearby.

For many years, private ownership of these notes was restricted, but surviving examples eventually became recognized as important pieces of American currency history. Earlier issues of the $10,000 Gold Certificate are considerably scarcer, with surviving examples highly sought after by advanced collectors. Today, the unusual story of the 1935 fire and the circumstances surrounding the survival of these cancelled certificates add another layer of historical interest to an already extraordinary denomination.
