1836 Silver Trade Dollar $1 PCGS AU Detail Surfaces Smoothed

The 1836 Silver Trade Dollar $1 PCGS AU Detail Surfaces Smoothed is a stunning example from the very first year of the Liberty Seated Dollar series. Struck at the Philadelphia Mint, this coin contains 26.73 grams of .900 silver (approximately 0.7734 troy oz pure silver) and features the iconic Seated Liberty design by Christian Gobrecht.

The Liberty Seated Dollar series began in 1836 as part of a major redesign of U.S. silver coinage. Designed by Christian Gobrecht, it depicts Liberty seated on a rock holding a liberty pole and shield, symbolizing strength and freedom. With a mintage of only 1,000 pieces, the 1836 is a key date and a highlight for collectors of early American silver dollars.

Christian Gobrecht’s design for this pattern drew inspiration from classic British coins for the seated Liberty on the obverse. The flying eagle on the reverse was inspired by a drawing of the Mint’s pet eagle, Old Pete, by Titian Peale, one of America’s earliest and foremost naturalist illustrators. This eagle design later influenced many other patterns and the regular cent issues of 1857-58. Gobrecht signed the obverse die at the edge of the base with “C. GOBRECHT F.” (Fecit – he made it), following classical tradition.
