1836 Silver Gobrecht Dollar $1 PCGS AU Detail Surfaces Smoothed

The 1836 Silver Gobrecht Dollar $1 PCGS AU Detail Surfaces Smoothed is a stunning example from the very first year of the series. Struck at the Philadelphia Mint, this coin contains 26.73 grams of .900 silver (approximately 0.7734 troy oz pure silver) and features the iconic Seated Liberty design by Christian Gobrecht.

Mint Director Robert M. Patterson, determined to create a more artistic coin design, commissioned artist Thomas Sully to sketch a full-length figure of Liberty inspired by the allegorical Britannia featured on British coinage. He also enlisted renowned painter Titian Peale to design the eagle for the reverse and tasked newly appointed Second Engraver Christian Gobrecht with transforming the artwork into a coin. Gobrecht combined elements from both Sully's and Peale's designs with his own creative vision, producing a masterful design that received immediate acclaim. On October 17, 1835, President Andrew Jackson and his Cabinet reviewed Gobrecht's sketches and responded with great enthusiasm.

On the reverse, Gobrecht introduced a bold new eagle inspired by Titian Peale's artwork. The eagle is shown in flight with its wings fully outstretched, surrounded by the inscriptions "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" and "ONE DOLLAR". Unlike earlier U.S. silver dollars, the design omitted the traditional heraldic shield and olive branch, giving the reverse a more natural and elegant appearance. The soaring eagle complemented the classical Liberty on the obverse, creating one of the most artistic and distinctive coin designs ever produced by the United States Mint. Although the design was short-lived, it remains a landmark in American numismatic history and laid the foundation for the Liberty Seated coinage that followed.
