1834 $5 Plain 4 Classic Head Gold Half Eagle Coin NGC XF Details

This beautifully designed and rare 1834 No Motto $5 Half Eagle is composed of .2417 oz. of .8992 fine gold, graded by NGC as Extra Fine Details - a coin with sharp details, and possible light wear at the highest points of the coin. The coin is labeled as cleaned and with obverse damage.

The half eagle was the first gold coin actually struck for the United States. The $5 Dollar piece was authorized to be coined by the Act of April 2, 1792, and the first type was .9167 fineness. Fineness became .8992 by the Act of June 28, 1834. Later, fineness became .900 by the Act of January 18, 1837. There are many varieties among the early dates, caused by changes in the number of stars and style of eagle, by overdates, by differences in size of figures in the dates.

This Classic head No Motto $5 Half Eagle was minted between the years 1834-1838, and is a perfect testament to America's glorious history. The coin was designed by William Kneass, who was the second Chief Engraver of the US Mint from 1824 until his death in 1840. As on the quarter eagle of 1834, the motto "E PLURIBUS UNUM" was omitted from the new, reduced-size half eagle of 1834, to distinguish the old coins that had become worth more than face value. The obverse side of coin contains Lady Liberty with long, curly hair facing to the left, her loose curls cascading down her neck, and wearing a coronet with the word "LIBERTY" inscribed on it. 13 stars encircle her, with the date of the coin positioned below her profile. The reverse side features a bald eagle, wings outstretched with a shield across its chest, carrying an olive branch and a bundle of arrows in each of its talons. The coin is inscribed with the words "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," and "5 D." Classic Head Half Eagles were minted in one variation in Philadelphia (without a mintmark), Charlotte, North Carolina (“C”), and Dahlonega, Georgia (“D”).

Like all of our other gold coins, this one is guaranteed to be 100% authentic. Item will be wrapped and packaged safe for delivery.
