Bullion Exchanges is honored to provide this 1222-1254 AD Byzantine-Nicaea John III Ducas Gold AV Hyperpyron, now available for purchase. The Hyperpyron was a coin used during the Byzantine Empire in the late Middle Ages, introduced by Emperor Alexios I Komnenos to replace the solidus. The ascension of John III Ducas Vatatzes, who appears on the reverse of the coin, was initially contested but he soon secured his position through a military victory. John III successfully ruled from 1224 until his death in 1254.

The obverse features the image of Christ encircled in a halo, holding the Gospels.

The reverse showcases John III being crowned by the Virgin Mary while holding a labarum.
