The Standing Liberty was minted from 1916-1930 and plays off its predecessor, the Seated Liberty, and replaced the Barber Quarter. Today, the Standing Liberty Quarters are often purchased by coin collectors for both their silver content and numismatic value. The obverse design features Lady Liberty, striding forth with a shield in a gateway that says “IN GOD WE TRUST”. She faces the right of the coin, the heraldic east, in the direction of World War I. She bears a scarf, olive branch, and a shield to represent the idea that when Lady Liberty (the US) steps in, her ultimate goal is to defend peace.

The reverse displays the same design as the 1836 Gobrecht dollar, but the eagle flies from left to right instead. It also is one of the last designs on circulating coinage to feature a naturalistic eagle instead of a heraldic eagle.
